They are just cheap white melamine cupboards and my husband added a simple wood trim prefab around all the edges to give them a bit of texture before painting.

Remove any excess with a lint free cloth.
If your cabinets have a wood veneer essentially a very thin layer of real hardwood over a pressed material you will also need to sand before painting your kitchen cabinets but before you break out the sandpaper or paint carefully inspect the veneer for loose edges chips or cracks.
Once dry wax the doors using clear chalk paint wax and a chalk paint wax brush.
Leave the wax to harden.
