Thinset mortar lays a bed for placing tile. If you want to update your kitchen or bathroom walls with tiles you don t have to remove existing painted drywall to do so. Allow the mortar or mastic to sit for at least 12 hours to set properly. After the tiles have set for at least a day the wall is ready to grout.

Sheetrock or drywall is no different for tiling over than wood plaster cement or other wall materials. By locating wall studs outside the tile perimeter and cutting through the drywall along the centers of the studs you can then pry the drywall along with the marble tiles away from the studs. Attach the material to the studs in the drywall with galvanized nails or staples to prevent rusting. Large heavy wall tiles are a challenge to hang because the weight of tiles makes them prone to slip off the wall.

Gray thinset can sort of muddle the brightness of marble. Then coat the marble with a grout remover or tile sealer to prevent staining and to make grout removal easier. In theory the easiest solution is to build from the bottom supporting the lowest tile course right on the floor and letting the upper courses rest on those. Cover the wall with a water resistant barrier such as building paper or roofing felt.

The wall has to simply be prepared in order to complete this task properly. Sometimes uncompressed thinset ridges and valleys can shadow through marble. Thinset adheres to sheetrock as well as any other surface but you need to consider the purpose of the area when installing tile.
