The movie s academy award winning art direction team first approached jens hansen about making the ring in march 1999. It first appeared in the earlier story the hobbit 1937 as a magic ring that grants the wearer invisibility tolkien changed it into a malevolent ring of power and re wrote parts of the hobbit to fit in with the expanded narrative. In order to make the ring more modern we had some fun coming up with ideas on how to redesign and repurpose this old jewelry. It s almost as if all of the jewelry of the original owner was combined into the one ring.

The one ring was one of the most powerful artifacts ever created in middle earth it was crafted by the dark lord sauron in the fire of orodruin also known as mount doom during the second age sauron s intent was to enhance his own power and to exercise control over the other rings of power which had been made by celebrimbor and his people with sauron s assistance. Jens submitted 15 prototypes in a variety of weights and finishes and from this extensive collection the final movie ring design was selected and used in the filming of the lord of the rings and the hobbit trilogies.
